U.POS UP-990 2D is a handheld 2D barcode scanner — it reads QR codes and other two-dimensional codes as well as ordinary linear barcodes.
The 2D capability is the reason to choose a scanner like this rather than a bonus. Digital payment QR codes, loyalty codes shown on a phone screen and government e-invoicing codes are all two-dimensional, and a traditional laser scanner cannot read any of them. A 2D imager also reads a code off a glowing phone screen, which laser scanners struggle with, and reads it at any orientation instead of needing the beam lined up with the bars.
Scanners of this class present themselves to the computer as a keyboard over USB, so the scanned code simply appears wherever the cursor is — no driver, and it works with essentially any POS software.
