A counting machine removes the two costs of handling cash by hand: the time spent, and the errors nobody notices until the till is short. For exchange offices, retail chains and any business banking daily takings, it pays for itself quickly.

Two types, and the difference matters

• Piece counting — counts how many notes are present. Suitable when notes are already sorted by denomination.
• Mixed value counting — reads each note and totals the actual value of an unsorted bundle. This is what most businesses actually need.

Counterfeit detection is built into most models using UV, magnetic and infrared checks. Two-pocket machines separate suspect notes automatically instead of stopping the count.
